Tako Take-off
How smart are octopus? Probably smarter than you think, possibly smarter than your neighbor and definitely smarter than your goldfish. They exhibit excellent problem solving skills and general cognitive awareness as proven by numerous studies.
10 Year Surface Interval
I love big picture diving where you’re in awe of a whole ecosystem interacting naturally in some big epic event like a feeding frenzy. This could have been one of my top 5 dives in New England and I got pictures to prove it.

Spills Kill
On Friday, April 11th 2025, Boston had a front row seat to the irreversible and devastating damage of a marine catastrophe. In the early hours just after sunrise Fishing Vessel Eileen Rita (of New England Marine Inc.), a scalloper out of New Bedford ran around on Green Island and sank in Hypocrite Channel, just outside of the Boston inner harbor.

Approach of the Storm
Newport and Jamestown Rhode Island have been dressing up for Debby in the week before her arrival with growling seas and shrouded skies. Even with a hurricane in its path, this hidden gem of New England behaves elegantly and with style. From the sleepy neighborhoods and harbors to the upper class sailing society of Newport, these images will give you a glimpse into the feeling of Narragansett Bay.
Bad Luck Banana’s
Ever wondered why captain’s and fishermen are terrified of bananas being onboard? I’m not superstitious….. but as a sailor, I’m a little “sticious” and despite understanding the reasons why this superstition came about, there are still things out there we can’t fully explain and thus gives reason for most of us only “slightly-sticious” to still err on the side of caution. I urge you to read on, listen to the history behind this superstition of bringing banana’s onboard and make the decision for yourself.
Peachy Sky at Marker 5
Watch your depth, the tide is low. The sun is dropping, ushering the light away and giving the water an uninviting darkness, but the seas are calm, breeze so fresh and colors are vivid. Traveling on through Dorchester Bay the sky is bright with a hazy peach colour as the last minutes of sunset pass by giving way to vibrant pre-darkness blue tones. In the early days, sailing into Boston Harbor would have looked much different….
The Legend of Nix’s Mate
Nix’s Mate, by the Narrows and just north of Gallops Island was long known to stand for tragedy and terror now long forgotten by modern society. Until as late as 1835 those accused of piracy and severe crimes at sea were given the ultimate punishment. Sailors were hung on Boston Common in a public spectacle before being thrown back on a boat and taken far from the good people of town to Nix’s Mate.

Half Tide Hangout
It’s halfway past low tide and the seas are rising high. The hangout spot for the seals and ducks will soon disappear under the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. In the last few hours they soak up the sun and dry their bones with each other on a seaweed covered rock pile off the New England coast.
