Just like fish out of water, divers are meant to be below the surface. Dive gear is heavy and awkward on land or on a boat, anywhere with gravity really. That’s why as soon as you’re geared up the priority is get in the drink, and the opposite true at the end of a dive, get up and out of that gear.
